Title: In Frustrated Gratitude
Description: any words of wisdom for a beginner

:babies: Hi Folks; I picked up a metal detector for Christmas last year and was really excited about trying it out. Its been a great exercise in frustration. :iknow: I live in Marin which seems to nothing more then highway 101 and a giant stretch of national park and state park lands that doesn't take too kindly to people quietly scanning. Granted historic sites and such not withstanding, but there has to be somewhere in the North Bay that your not percieved as a vandal? Any words of wisdow :plato: from those of you who have much more experience then lowly I?

Thanks Mark

There is a monthly club meeting up your way. Santa Rosa I believe.

A lot of detecting pressure in your area, in obvious spots, d/t San Rafael has been headquarters of Whites west coast distributor since the late 70s or early 80s. You can always cross over the bridge to hunt SF parks. No one seems to mind there, as long as you are being discreet, don't "stick out", etc....

Yeah. I'd go a little bit out of your area.

There's loads of places you can start out at. If you get really "into it"and want the older stuff..you're gonna have to do some history research to locate sites. If you haven't already..do some local history research to see if there are any near you.

Of course. Then you have to locate them and see if they are "detectable". Are they in plain view? Are they abandon..and no-one's around? Many sites are judgement calls you have to make yourself.

Anyway. There must be some local schools or tot-lots in your area that are O.K. to detect..yeah?

I'm just throwing stuff out there.

I might suggest going to the main "Metal Detecting" forum..view some topics and maybe reply to some.
Eventually you're going to run across other folks who detect in your area. I can almost guarantee it. That's how many of us have become friends. Next thing you know..you're out hunting with same people who's topics you have been reading.

I'm sure there are others in your area that go detecting and you don't even know it!

Really. Give it a whirl and get your name out there.
BELIEVE ME. We've all been where you're at.

We'll be looking for you!

Best of luck.
Bill
