Title: Asking Permission To Hunt A Church ?

Cal_Cobra - January 28, 2008 10:35 PM (GMT)
Hi,

I'm new to the hobby, and am in the process of learning my Coin$trike and Fisher F4.

I've been hunting at local schools and parks to learn my C$, and am slowly picking it up.

There's a local church that's been there since 1885 that I'd like to hunt, but would like to ask permission first.

Not going to the church, or knowing anyone affiliated with it, I feel a bit awkward asking them to pillage their grounds

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to approach asking permission to hunt the church property (note: there's no cemetery, it's all nice grassy lawn) ?

Thanks,
Cal

Hey Cal Cobora,

Just give 10% of what you fine to the church. ;)
This will make most of church people happy and God too! :D
Good luck :thumber:

I sort of think of churches like shopping centers: Yes, private property, but the public has permission to pass "unless revoked by owner". When I was in Jr. High, our school bus stop was right on the lawn/parking lot of a neighborhood Baptist Church (just a corner where we all stood to wait for the bus). People would sit on the grass waiting, etc... When I got my first detector, I hit this church lawn, and never even though to ask (I guess I figured it was like ... public or something). Same for parochial school yards: We would just go, thinking they were no different than public schools. Afterall, we'd go there after school to fly kites, or play ball or something, so it never occured to us that detecting was any different :)

I've hit a lot of church yards over the years, while it's off-hours, and usually no one says anything. But that's not a technical answer, I understand.

Tom I thought about taking the "it's easier to ask for forgiveness then permission" approach (after all it's a church right?) .....I might just try it, just not on a Sunday :plato:
