BenjyH-
Here is a list of the content of U.S. pennies since they were minted. On the forum the pennies minted since 1982 are commonly called "zinc" pennies because of their content of mostly zinc, 97.5%. These pennies, went pulled out of the turf, are usually blistered or, in some cases, have holes eaten through them.
Hope this helps.

The "Party-Pooper"of the coin world . It is extremely hard to find Indian heads at mid range depths without having to dig astronomical amounts of these worthless pieces of junk .

George..my man. "Party Pooper of the coin world" says it perfectly.

They're almost embarrassing. They start to decompose-corrode-degrade..etc. with minimal contact in salt water. In soil, it doesn't take long either. Especially in well fertilized turf areas.

Chris(Axenolith) rolls'em up and turns (or deposits) them in to the bamk.. He doesn't give a crap how "charred" they are.
I'm sure as long as they are recognizable as a penny, the bank has to take them.
One thing I've wondered about is.. At what point of decomposition do they cease being honored?
I don't even bother bringing the ones that have even the mildest "acne" to a coinstar machine. They often clogged it up..then you have to get a manager and...for-get-it.

Zinc is okay for coating screws. Not pennys.

Yeah. Pull-tabs..pull-rings..pop-tops..too. They blanket our parks with mine-fields of mental frustration. A cruel..on-going test of one's dedication to the hobby.

Thay'll never break me..though. Never. Mu-ha-ha-ha-ha!!!!!

Not to mention that if a child was to swallow a corroded zinc it would not be good...

Pull tabs and zincs are the bane of detectorists...

I am convinced they exist on the moon and other places where man has never been...

The DDT of metals...
