If you hunt the wet sand only, like me, and dont want to waste your time, hunt somewhere else when you find somebody elses fresh holes.
In the last 3 years, anytime I hunt a beach that has just been hunted, I get zilch.
This morning, I got up at 3:30 am arrived at the beach at 4 am and saw that the wet sand has been gridded and dug up with holes. I got zilch after 2 hours
I never learn
note: the dry sand is another matter. There is just too much for anyone to cover in one day.
Good point, Bing. The key, though, is making sure that the previous detectorists followed a grid pattern. Last summer, I really cleaned up while following a guy who was rather aimlessly seaching across the wet sand. I took the time to do a grid pattern, and it was amazing all he had left behind. One of my better days at the beach.

Your right Gerber. Just my luck. The guys who usually grids my favorite beach is that Lance guy from the Whites commercials. I think he is a professional detectorist. On my way to the beach this morning, he was already gridding Dockweiler, by the time I got to my spot, I noticed that he had finished with it.
bing
plus I hate guys who don't fill in their holes, especially where the joggers and walkers
are. Its a great way for us to get kicked off the beach. Guys!! Fill in your holes!!!
