Hello-
I've been thinking about getting a Whites DFX machine, but I've heard that it isn't the easiest machine to master. Any advice? I'm looking for a machine to use on land and in/or near the water. Also, are there any TH'ing clubs in the West San Fernando Valley of So. Calif.

You can take the DFX right out of the box, turn it on, put in a basic program and go to work. But... if you want to get the maximum out of it you should learn what all of the controls (and there are a bunch) do. B)

Sorry I can't help you with the Socal club thing as I am in New Mexico. :P

My family bought me a Whites Prizm III metal detector and I really enjoy hunting with it.

Are you ready to upgrade to the DFX? You are fast :-)

I don't know of a club in the SF Valley.
Here are the So. Cal. clubs that I do know of:

I use a DFX and I enjoy all the options . I started useing preset prog . and they work fine , after you use it for awhile you will learn more about adjusting the different controls to suit your needs. It is expensive but it works well in dry sand and wet if you hunt beaches . You have alot of options for adjusting to all types of conditions I think it is a fine metal detector . I recently bought a book by Jeff Foster called DIGGING DEEPER WITH THE DFX . this book has helped me understand all the options and when to use them . I'm still learning and the machine has paid for itself a couple of times already . hope this helps alittle in makeing your deision . Jeff Foster P.O. box 260 Stony Brook NY 11790 U.S.A.

There are two books I believe on how to master the DFX, I mastered my Explorer II in less than two weeks by reading the manual several times, reading 'Mastering the Explorer S & XS' twice, watching the training presentation twice, and by air testing with lots of probable targets. And the Explorer II is harder to learn than the DFX, so if you get the DFX buy one of the books made for mastering the DFX, read the manual several times so that you understand each and every feature and watch the training video/DVD. There's a classroom forum on www.findmall.com for the DFX. The DFX is a great machine, you won't regret buying it.
