Santa Cruz beaches are fine! Just be kind and fill your holes after digging so people don't trip on them, and pack away the trash you dig and you'll have nothing to worry about...

All CA beaches are ok to detect. The only ones you may be referring to, when you say you heard that some were off-limits, is rumors that federal (Stinson, etc...) are offlimits. Yet I've heard of guys that went in broad daylight, for days on end, (oblivious to any "rules") and no one said a thing to them. Doh!
State of CA owned beaches, if you read the minutia enough, have stuff like: "alert the rangers upon coming and going, flag any hole where an old coin came from and alert an archaeologist, turn in all jewelry", etc... I've md'd state of CA beaches for 25 yrs. and never had anyone say a thing (cept one time when they thought I was harrasing a sea lion :))
Ask here, don't ask the powers that be. We don't want them looking up in their book, and saying "no", when reality says, they could care less.

All beaches in the Golden Gate Recreational Area (and all national parks) are off limits. That covers San Francisco to Point Reyes.

Aloha from Vegas!
It looks like I might be spending Xmas on the beach at Capistrano and wondered if anyone knew about metal detecting the beaches and parks in the immediate area. I will be staying on beach road in a beach rental and would like to find out more about the area.
I detect a lot in the ghost towns for relics and stuff but would like to try my luck on the beaches and parks. Any help anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.
BTW, I use a Tesoro Lobo Super Traq.
Aloha again,

All the beaches in So. CA are open, with no restrictions, from what I hear. No one asks, and that's the way it's kept B)
What kind of coins have you gotten from ghost towns in Nevada?

Only heard about two incidents on Southern California beaches where some local law enforcement officers told a couple of friends of mine to stop detecting the beach. One was in Long Beach & the other in Seal Beach. Soon as the officers left my buddies went right back to hunting! I've hunted in Seal Beach without incident myself. There is some restrictions as to the time you're on the beach. Down in Huntington Beach they don't want you to be there between 10:00pm & 6:00am. According to their PD...it's a liabilty issue. If you get jumped, mugged & robbed...cities are afraid you might sue for not enough protection. Dammed if you do & dammed if you don't! So just ask to be on the safe side! Otherwise most beaches are open for detecting!
Aloha Kaimi! Nice to have another fellow Hawaiian hittin' da turf! Beach detecting is pretty good when the summer crowds are raging. Winter hunting is good once a good storm sucks the sand out. Providing the Tesoro LST can hunt wet ocean sand. One simple lesson is to follow the crowds! Should be fun at the beach!

Aloha y'all!
The Ghost towns just north of vegas have been pretty fruitfull for me this past season. found a couple of really nice silver coins and even found two old tobacco cans with a bunch of indian head pennies stuffed away under the corner rock of an old foundation site. Found a couple of small gold nuggets also but nothing to brag about.
Yep, my Sister ( a nun with the Sisters of Social Services ) made arrangements to book a house on the beach that the church owns. Just cant pass up the chance to check out the area. I ran my detector at their old convent last year and found a lot of coins in the grassy leading up to their chapel. Since then they have made plans to renovate the area and build a retirement home for the older nuns. Can hardly wait for the bulldozer to start clearing away the shrubbery and orange trees. :D
MELE KALIKIMAKA AND A HAUOLI MAKAHIKI HOU!
Aloha from Vegas baby!
