Title: Former User, Once Again Newbie W/ Questions

Hey all. I've enjoyed reading the forums the last few weeks and figured it was time to post up some questions.

I used to detect quite alot, using a White's Classic IDX. It was mainly for coins, relics and some gold. Never really on the beach, mostly in parks and abandon sites. Anyways, other hobbies took over so I sold my equipment and have not been doing any type of detecting for quite a while. I'm amazed at how far technology has come, even in the few short years I have not been doing it, so any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Now to my questions:

Right now I am looking for a detector for beaches and parks (occasional trips to abandon spots up in the desert as well). I will not be taking it into wet sand right now, instead I will be using it on dry sand only. The detectors I am looking at are the White's M6 and the White's XLT. I am leaning towards the M6, only because of the price.

1) For those with the knowledge, is the XLT a much better machine for the extra $$?

2) Do you feel the M6 would be a good choice for my uses?

I have not fully decided on the White's, but they are the ones I have read most about. I'm also checking into the Xterra-50 and the Explorer II (which is probably out of my price range).

I am in Westchester, near the Los Angeles Airport, with access to many beaches within a few miles of me. I would be very appreciative if someone in my area would let me tag along on a morning beach hunt, to see how the new technology works. I would be more than happy to buy breakfast at a Denny's or something just to pick your brain too. I'm not looking for your spots, as I have a bunch in mind already.

It's funny, but about 2 years ago I ran into a guy who was detecting down at a beach my family and I frequent quite often. He was loading up his Toyota pick-up truck with his stuff and after I asked him, he showed me his finds (one of which was a nice ring). Since then I have been regreting my decision to sell my equipment. It's time to put the regret aside and start doing it!! :)

Thanks in advance and I will check back as often as I can!

Of course, this is the best MD forum on the net but I
don't know how many XLT users we have here.

You might want to also post your question on an
XLT-specific forum like this one:

Hey, Eric.

I used an XLT for 5 yrs. Good for shallow coin hunting in dry sand, very erratic in wet. Hard to find settings that work well in most coditions.

Spent alot of time messing with adjustments and programming to get better perfomance.

I switched to a Sovereign in 1999 and realized what I had been missing.
Extreme depth on beaches over 12" on quarters in wet sand, with the BBS 10 coil. Takes a while to learn the tones but once you do-- it`s Dynomite on gold.
I would go for the Sovereign. Hope this helps, Try one out.
