Title: Just Starting Out!
Description: Hi to all!
Mitch - May 31, 2005 07:40 PM (GMT)
Hi! My name is Mitch and I just started metal detecting. I bought a Prizm III, and have been out a few times. I found some coins in a park and in my front yard. It has been fun. I wanted to know if anyone uses knee pads while metal detecting and digging. I find it makes it allot easier on the knees. Any advice as to where to look for treasure would be great. I live in Ventura County just north of LA. Thanks for any and all help. Mitch
P.S. Stay safe stay vertical.

Hey Mitch, welcome! Great forum here with lots of great people to help with ur problems. I think a couple people use the Prizm III that might be able to help u out. As for the knee pad thing, i dont use them, but i know a lot of people who do. Ur knees get pretty banged up by the crap on the ground, and even with pants on you get it sometimes. As for advice on where to hunt, parks houses demos and other open spots. Thats my input!

Welcome Mitch!
I use only one knee pad. I find that I only half-kneel when I dig, so the other knee pad is a spare.

I use a pad that I lay down and kneel on. They sell them in the gardening section of big hardware/home stores.

Yes on the knee pads....especially when youre wearing shorts in the summer and youre kneeling down on dry grass or wet mushy grass.....in the sand...dont even bother with them...

I go to the gardening section of the local hardware store and buy a foam pad to kneel down on. It costs only a couple bucks and has a handle.
Welcome to the hobby!

Hi Mitch,
I don't use knee pad or a pad, just one more thing to carry! Metal detecting will become addicting. You'll end up taking your detector eveywhere you go! If you don't have it with you. You'll wish you did ! Learn to dig a plug, so that you don't leave a mess! Practice pinpointing, over and over again ! Park employees get upset if you leave a mess! You want to stay on there good side! Best thing to do is join a club in your area. This way you can make contacts and learn the ins and outs of detecting!

i use a little foam mat that fits into my detecting pack, about 1 ft by 8 inches. i have kneepads but can't find them = /

What I found helpful was a small auto rubber floor mat, like for behind the front seats for rear passengers. I got it for 99 cents at the 99 cent store. It's thin enough to roll/fold and slip into the carpenter's tool apron I wear. On wet grass and other mucky ground I spread it out to kneel on before I dig. I also have a pair of light styrofoam type kneepads in case I need them.

Hi Mitch. Yes and no on the knee pads. Carry them with you in your detectors bag. Sometimes Ill need em, sometimes I dont. People with Explores are prone to sore knees from digging really deep holes I hear, so I imagine theyll need them the most.

Hello,
My name is Bing and I like treasure hunting/outdoor gear
Lets start with the most important thing besides your MD and digger. WATER! I suggest you buy a cheapo heavy duty nylon fanny pack that has a decent size pouch and water bottle holster. Always bring water and drink often. Dehydration can sneak up on you pretty fast. A little sleepiness, lightness of feeling and next thing you know, 911!
Second, I use KNEE PADS. Not only is it for saving your knees, but it also appeases pays itself off when it comes to doing the laundry.
Third, GLOVES. There is always the danger of cutting your hands on your digger or sharp objects that you may be recovering. Leather gloves are no good as they absorb and retain water. When soggy, they are a PITA. Best to stick with synthetic fiber woven gloves that are latex dipped. Usually 1.50 at home depot. I have seen 9.00 kevlar knit gloves, but I loose them so often, I'd rather stick with the cheapos.
Fourth, LONG SLEEVED WHITE SHIRT. This is good for keeping the sun off you skin. White reflects most light so it will keep you cool better. Cotton is good. There are also really effective athletic fabrics out there like VAPORWICK, DRY-FIT, UNDER ARMOUR etc etc. If you can get them at a good price, go for it. I have a couple that are just lets the breeze go thru them. I highly recommend them.
Fifth, HAT. I really like the kind that keeps the sun off your nape. My nape is already cooked crispy. Need all the help I can with it.
DONT WEAR STEEL TOED SHOES!
Rgds, bing

I have and use a really nice set of $15 knee pads which I bought at Home Depot. They are padded with a hard flexible gel plastic, very comfortable, strong protecting, and they really stay on your knee correctly. They don't have any metal in them and if you buy knee pads, make sure that they never have metal in them.
