Title: Surf And Gear ?

Dave 805 - May 17, 2006 04:50 AM (GMT)
This question is for those of you who hunt in the surf.

What gear do you use ?? I know a long handled scoup.. Wet/dry suit..

But do you guys use scuba gear? I would like to get out there but there is no way i can afford scuba gear.. Not right now.

So what do people here use ? Snorkle?

also any surf hunting tips would be greatly apreciated

The deepest ive worked in is about 1 foot of water but its a royal pain arround here with all the waves..

Thanks
Dave

I do a little beach hunting but it's mostly above the surf line at low tide.

The guys who hunt IN the surf are mostly waders.

Dave: I ususally just work in water up to my waist. But most the time I check the tides and work the low tide times you can cover alot more area with out wading .

From Ventura to Long Beach, there is almost no hunting in the surf. Too much pounding even in knee deep water. There may be some exceptions, but tis is the norm.

Dave-
I just recently purchased a PI unit, so, I pretty much have the same questions as you. If you, and I don't, have money for scuba gear, then I would think a snorkle mask would be the very least that you would need to get into somewhat deeper water unless you want to feel around on the ocean floor with your eyes closed.

Hiya Dave,

I know the temptation and desire to get into the surf and hunt but the surf out here is just to rough. You would be pounded silly and wouldnt get much hunting in. One suggestion I have is check out some of the swim areas in the bays and sheltered beaches. I know Newport Bay has a couple and Cabrillo Beach near the boat launch has a HUGE swim beach. Seems a guy could snorkel and wade to their hearts content without being hammered by the surf. Most of these areas get swamped in the summer time so it seems to be a good idea.

Hope this helps....

P.S. Make sure you have a water proof machine :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

It's a apin in the rear!

Socal water will scoop you up!

Think of all the gear that you haul out to hunt on land. Now add in scuba tanks, dry suit and all kinds of vital life support things you need. Dive knives, tanks etc.

Imagine this..............scuba diver down under with a scoop in one hand and detector in the other hand getting tossed around and getting tangled up in your gear and other things that are in the water like weeds and strings. Plus you have these fat old floves on and trying to pick up small items are a challenge.

It's hard to find a buddy to go with you so your on your own when the regulator takes a stuff, your all tangled up in some debree and then your most likely comining home empty handed loot wise.

This is not for the faint of heart or the begining diver.

BE SAFE AND STAY ON THE BEACH!

I got two reasons not to go for scuba......

1) think of the added complexity. You'll have all that gear to certify, re-certify, check list, unload, reload, clean and stow. not to mention that you have just lost a major appeal or metal detecting, spontaneity. You can't go out when you want as youre now talking about a 1 hour pre and post prep period. Unless you a willing to risk your but to save a few minutes.

2) WAYWARD LOBSTER TRAPS!

If you have a reason to suspect that there iare spanish doubloons down there, go for it!
