Title: New To Metal Detecting/hawaii Hunting

DiscriminatorII38 - June 7, 2005 12:08 AM (GMT)
Hey guys! I am pretty new to metal detecting and I just bought a Discriminator II from my local Big5 store. Was this a good buy? I recently found an old 1920s license plate in my backyard. It was really rusted but it wasn't too bad of shape. FYI it was like 12 inches deep. I mite post some pics later this week.

While I'm at it I am going to Hawaii this summer and I was wondering what time of day was the best time to hunt and which beach is the best. Also, is it best to put your detector in your carry on or in the luggage hold? Any help is most appreciated!

Welcome to the forum Discriminator!!As for Hawaii,I would hit the beach's early in the morning when there's no crowd and make sure you put any digging tool's in your regular luggage.HH,Tom

No...

Its not going to go beyond a couple of inches and no sensitivity to small jewelry. Since Hi can be minerlized, makes things even worse.

Stick with the Four Pro MFGs, Whites, Tesoro, Minelab and Garrett.

save up your coinage and get a used MXT, im gettin one, its for finding small gold, like nuggets, or jewelry, OR coins and relics! i have a whites XLT and i can easily find quarters like 8", EASY, but i wont dig it... i just want to know that its that deep... in the dirt i usualy only dig about 3" so i wont ruin the dirt and so i wont get cited by a cop

i went to oahu a few years ago. the parks seem virtually unhunted, especially the one near diamondhead. the beaches are hunted almost 24hrs a day. i was out at 3AM one time, and there were several other guys out there too.

I was at Waikiki..detecting at 1:00a.m.

Searched for about an hour. One target...a pulltab. It sucked.
Between other hunters and the beach grooming machine...the beach was totally cleaned out.
Now....in the water. That's another story.

Disco Kid.... don't 'cop' a shallow attitude in this hobby or you'll end up like my friend 925Bill.

I speak from experience, in Caifornia, there is no Penal Code Section for plugging out a coin in excess of 3" so don't sweat it.... no criminal intent, not considered malicious mischief or vandalism.

Just put things back the way you found them. Plugging is good for the grass.

Now, remember, your Christmas Formal is right around the corner....

You can swing your coil all over the parks, but digging is frowned upon!
You may not be bothered (Aloha spirit and all) by park personnal, however
catch one in a bad mood or make a mess you will be cited for defacing public property.

If I only had a nickel everytime the Misses frowned at something I did...

Regarding Deface.... that implys an intent.... there's the rub.

Generally speaking most get a warning from the regulators.

Life is a risk, as is marriage or any relationship.

As enough people for permission to do something and there is always one who will say NO, right or wrong.

If you don't ask, you don't know.

I was watching the gold prospecting show on the outdoor cable while back and they had a show about detecting at the main Waikiki areas...but not the beaches. he waited for low tides and waded out to the bay and picked up all sorts of goodies.

make sure your rig is waterproof.....
