A Tesoro Compadre. It's a good performer at a reasonable price . It's simple it's light and has a lifetime guarantee .

The White's prizm II because it is easy to operate, has a screen that indicates what it is over, lightweight and works really well. You can go to the whites web site (whiteselectronics.com) and get a $50 off coupon.

Personally, I went with the Ace 250 for my kids. (7 and 9) Easy to set up, pretty light and you can get a sunray probe for it that makes it a lot easier for them to learn target recovery.
The porobe cost about as much as the deteector, but it is well worth it once the kdis start to find things and enjoy the hobby. Plus the Ace 250 does get decent depth so it will grow with them as they get more skilled.

In my opinion the Ace 250 is your best choice, It's good for all ages and easy to use. I bought one for my son and I can't get it away from him. :D

ACE 250. Average Quality. Turn on and go... Simplicity as well as notch discrim and enough controls for tuning. Yet not too complex.
