Title: How To Start?
Description: Jumping in

So my wife casually mentions something about a childhood memory when we are talking about going to the beach. Then out of the blue she says's I always wanted a metal detector. Well it just so happens that I have an amazon coupon for 150. So I look at a few reviews and order a Bounty Hunter IV.
I think "wow I can't wait to go to the beach!" Going to bodega bay soon and then will be mostly around Santa Cruz.
Did a little reading while waiting for it to arrive and read so scary stuff about people getting in trouble for detecting where they are not supposed to.
So is there a guide as to where one can detect? Rules of thumb? I'm mainly interested in Northern CA beaches. Ideas on how to go forward?
Yep the bounty hunter came in yesterday and my wife and I are really looking forward to waving that thing around!

You might hit a few "tot lots" play grounds. Have fun with some easy targets at first. It will help you learn your detector.
If you go to a beach, you will want to get a sand scoop or make one.
Have fun.

avoid all ocean beaches between the southern city limits of San
francisco and the northern end of the parking lot at Stinson Beach.
Federal Juristiction. They collect metal detectors and fine any of
us miscreants who steal old coins & such.

Went out back and found an old hoe. heh. Seems to work.
Will try a sand lot this evening.
Any other beaches under federal "protection"?
We might be in Santa Cruz this weekend just to enjoy the waves but I know we won't be able to resist trying out a little MDing.
Advice for Santa Cruz?
Thanks all for the help. Very helpful board!
