Guys, I've appreciated your posts for some time now, especially the priceless info and the pics that come with. I've done more hunting on this site than I have MDing. I apologize in advance if my questions are redundant but I've done a lot of snooping around, on this site and others, and there still seems to be many contradictions as to laws and I was hoping you could help. Despite knowing much of this is based on common sense, I feel you guys could further enlighten me. I have links to many websites, but I'd prefer just personal opinions and experiences. 1) Is it okay to MD on California beaches, specifically Santa Monica, Malibu, and other beaches in the LA area without a permit or permission? 2) Is ALL of Griffith Park okay (even with the new "historical" title) or is it just certain parts? 3) Is there an overall ruling on your average neighborhood school or park? 4) Anything else you feel pertinent. Anything you'd care to share is more than welcomed. I can't thank you enough, I've got the bug but lack the knowledge and experience to take a full stab at it. P.S. I'd never be so rude/bold to ask for someone's "honey hole" but if any of you have a location that is legal, that you'd consider "played out" and you don't plan on going back, I'd really appreciate it if you wouldn't mind sharing the location. I'd just like to start out in place where I wouldn't get harassed, ticketed, or my MD confiscated... Just to build up my confidence with my machine. Thanks again |

No problem on beaches but state parks could be a problem, just follow rules and code of ethics |

I spent alot of time around the beaches in and around LA, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Santa Monica Pier area, Venice Beach, and never had a problem. Even at Dockweiller State Park by El Segundo and never had any problem. However I did run into problems during a vacation in Oregon. I was stearnly talked to by a Park Ranger for Metal Detecting on a beach. I showed him all the trash I had picked up and I told him that I planned on disposing of it in the trash can by the parking lot, but he didn't care. He got kind of rude about it and I was told to put away the metal detector or leave! So I kept my mouth shut and left, not what I wanted to do, but I didn't want to give our hobby a bad name. Some people don't get it! Troll |

Detecting Oregon beaches requires a permit. Most beaches have a no metal detecting sign with a lovely pick of a guy detecting in a circle with the slash through it stating MD’ing is off limits with out a permit. The permit is easy and free (at least last time I got one it was free) you can get them at any ranger station along the coast. Usually good for a few days. When it expires you just get another one. I never did have to show it. Good luck on beach down South |

Hello and Welcome Defiance. I have hunted the previously ,mentioned beaches without a problem. As far as public parks I have emailed the city parks and recreation departments and code enforcement offices, and have received some replys. Whittier parks are OK but you need to get a permit for $ 31.00 DAN |
