This past weekend Tom in Salinas graciously offered to show me the ropes on a used Minelab Explorer II that I bought last week. (I've been using an M-6 for about 16 months but wanted a more sophisticated machine.)

We went to a couple of places he suggested and he not only clocked in some settings in my Explorer that should work but also loaned me a spare Sunray probe to use until the one I ordered comes in--Sunray told me it wouldn't have the X-1 in stock for at least another two weeks.

Tom is incredibly knowledgeable about the technical aspects of MDing and the historical research he's done on places in Monterey County dating back to the Mission days is very impressive.

I want to thank him for his time, his generosity, and his trouble and to let him know that I'll be in touch with him to return his probe as soon as Sunray gets mine to me.

I agree... I attribute a lot of the success I've had to his selflessly showing me the ropes (as well as a couple good spots) when I was first as well... He's a good guy, that's for sure... :)

Jw, thanx for the link. I actually find myself struggling to explain things, remember them, etc... When I first got the explorer, many years ago, I poured over the instructions, and Ron, Jeff, and others explained the functions in laymen's terms to me. Ron showed me side-by-side signals (ie.: "I'd pass that" or "I'd chase this", etc...). So at that time, I got real proficient in explaining it to the next person. But now though, after all these years of having all my programs in there that I like, I find myself struggling to explain, remember the terms, comparisons, etc... Your link did a good job. thanx.

Oh, and Jayson, CMtoys, and Mike: what you failed to realize, is that I pick-pocketed you under the pretense of metal detecting. You should've checked your wallets afterwards, and you'd have seen :rotfl:

JW, thanks for the referral to your in-depth explanation of Explorers. I'm going to read and re-read it. I've found people like you, Tom, and others are helpful, unselfish, and so knowledgable about this hobby. Thanks to you all, and I'll undoubtably be posting some questions as I try to unravel the mysteries of the Exp. II.

I haven't been around here for a while so I just saw this thread now (I moved from Monterey to Ventura county this summer and have just started detecting again).

Anyway, Tom did a very similar thing for me when I got my Explorer earlier this year. He showed me the ropes at a school he likes and let me borrow his Sunray Probe (probably the same one!) until I got one of my own. I really appreciated the time he spent helping me with that. Not having Tom close by any more to help out on "beach patrol" is one of the things I miss most about Monterey. On the up side at least there is a metal detecting club down here unlike Monterey (Gold Coast Treasure Hunter)!
