Hello there everyone. I am new to the group and also new to metal detecting. I have gone out twice today included and the drive took so long and in my quest for a decent location Ive only had a total of 20 min or so with detector on the ground. Im waiting for the next semester of college to start so this week I am just burning time so I will be going out again in the morning. I was thinking about logging some hours on the beach and getting some experience under my belt since I am new and have a lot to learn. My biggest problems seem to be the following two things 1. location 2. I dont really feel keen on people watching me at the beach. I know it seems odd but I have reasons I suppose that I dont like being the center of attention for an entire group of people. Anyway I know there is a lot of secrecy among metal detectors and I have spent a lot of time checking out some of the southern california groups and chose this one in hopes someone might be willing to show me a decent location for starters. Im not looking to get rich but I would like to find more than rusted tin cans bottle caps and misc small arms casings. Although I have to admit I wont mind the chance to clean up that trash while I look for more entertaining finds. |

Welcome to the forum. Plenty of people in S Cal that will assist you. You will get over the "center of attention" feeling the more you do it. Especially at the beach. Plenty of people at the beach doing things and wearing things that draw attention. We are just the "Geeks with Geiger counters" and one look and the onlookers are on to someone else. The kids will get a kick out of you too. Just remember if you engage a kid in conversation about treasure hunting, he will probably follow you around for a while. I don't mind it too much as long as they don't keep reaching in the hole while I am trying to dig. Good Luck and the hobby only gets better the longer you stay with it. You have to pay your entry fee with a few rusty bottle caps and pull tabs until you start to learn your machine and learn a few good places to hunt. We all started somewhere and if you hang with the hobby you will find some great stuff! Good Luck Ron |

That's a good intro Ron Yeah, my dad and I call the kids "The Plague" when we're not in the mood... ![]() Hey Azendai, yeah, a lot of people are very helpful on here... Give us some info to work with: Where are you located? What machine are you using? What are you looking to find? (Old coins, new coins, jewelry, relics?) Yeah, you get over being the center of attention pretty quick, and to tell you the truth, that's half the fun. You come to realize you're doing something totally awesome and engaging while no one has any clue what you're up to, especially when you start getting into the more interesting spots... So yeah, wish I had more advice right now, but give us a few more details and we'll see what we can do! And most importantly, don't give up early, because it's awesome once you start digging your first good finds. |

Im located southern cali in the Riverside area. I seem to be in the middle where everything is 30min - 2 hours away minus a turn of the century tin mine thats up the road. problem with that site is modern day lead/turn of the century smashed tin can trash and of course a fortune in brass casings. Beach wise Im only limited by how far my Jeep grand cherokee can take me as for equipment I am using the $300 Smarter image detector sold at big 5 (got it on sale) Nothing special as far as detectors go but it does seem to be pretty accurate. I just have no idea how to do anything special with it lol not sure on the model its in the car and Im too lazy at this hour to pull it I am more likely to be excited by old coins and relics. The ghost towners dont seem to be too friendly of a bunch. From what Ive learned the hard way they fancy us as destroyers of history because we dont leave something to rot away or be smashed by some punk teenager with a 12 guage. Ghost towns are a little hard to work with off the bat there is a lot of left over refuse that there is little use for bits of tin from roof's etc. Ok I looked it up The Sharper Image TSI-11 Metal Detector Express |
